In this post we will explain in simple term’s some of the terminology of what is involved in having and running a successful eShop business

The Domain Name

The first and one of the most important decisions’s you will need to make once you have decided that you want an eShop is to decide what to call it, which extension to use, ie .com .co.uk etc. First off we will take it for granted you know the product you are selling, as an example we will use STATIONARY we will also say that you are selling mainly to the UK . So when considering the Domain Name you should be looking to include STATIONARY in that domain. Obviously Stationary.com etc will be taken so at alternatives and try to use KEYWORDS (Explained Later) where possible.
So this could be Colour, Category or manufacturer etc. Bare in mind that you want your potential customer to find you as quickly as possible when they enter there search term into there browser for the Product they are searching. You want to be matching that search as much as possible so that it’s your site that is listed as close to first as possible. With regards to the domain extension i.e. .co.uk, .com etc. Google does not show presidence with search results to a UK user, It would be safe to assume that either .co.uk or .com would do the same job for you. On occasions such as this and in most cases we would recommend purchase of as many popular extension’s as possible certainly the .co.uk and .com, If nothing else it stop’s your branding being copied and simply have your eShop on either extension with the other extensions pointing to the chosen domain. ie http://www.buildmyeshop.com with the .com etc pointing to that domain so that if a customer inputs buildmyeshop.co.uk into there browser they are simply taken to the .com

This is the second decision you need to be making. Every eShop needs a cart, It is in essence what runs your eShop, it is configured on which methods you want to accept payments, how to display products etc etc etc. There are lots of carts to choose from and this is not an easy decision to make for all. There are Free Options (open source) aswell as paid options (hosted solutions). As a rule we stick to open source (free) as quite simply there is no difference other than one is free and one costs money. Why pay when you can get something free? Every new eShop owner should be looking for a cart that is as easy as possible to use and also allows for as many functions that are needed at present and also can be added at a
later stage if needed.For all these reason’s we would recommend Zencart as your preferred option. It is open source (free) and there is plenty of add-on modules readily available to allow you to have most options you may want for your site right now and is also easily upgraded at any time in the future. It will allow you to add an many categories and products as you wish. It will also allow you to add product attributes to any multiple listing you have. ie different colour’s and sizes etc. It is very easy to optimise for the search engines so they will actually find the products you are listing.

The Template

This is the front end of your custom designed eShop, This is what your customers see, its the appearance of your eShop like the wallpaper on any wall of your house so it Must be appealing to your customer, If your customer does not like the look of your store or if it just looks like any other store you are risking them just bouncing straight back off your eShop before they even have a look inside to check out your products or prices. The easiest way round this is to have a look at other eShop’s you like or the various template sites that are out there.There are plenty example and ideas out there and all we need is to know your idea’s and any requirement’s you might have or want changed.This is what we call your brief This Post goes into a lot more detail into what is required for a good eShop brief. Templates can be customised any in way you choose, ie can display new products seperately, can have slideshows which is like the front window of your Custom Designed eShop and ideally should display the main messages you wish to get across to your customers such as postage options that might be free etc. The design needs a lot of thought put into into it before you settle on the final option.

Hosting

Hosting is required to store your Custom Designed eShop on. Basically when customers visit your website they are using bandwith to visit your site, to add products to your there cart etc Your products themselves also use memory within your hosting account, so the more customer’s viewing your products or the more product’s you are selling on your eShop then the bigger a hosting package you will need. In this Post we will try to explain what is needed from every client in order to provide a really good brief for any of our Custom Designed eShop Package’s and any other work being provided by BuildMYeShop.

We have broken this guide down to a number of stages in order to make it more manageable

Introduction

We will need to know a bit about your company in order to get a feel for how you would like your Custom eShop built. A good starting point would be to include some of the Details below

What We Will Need

When commissioning BuildMYeShop to assist with a custom designed eShop, it is vital to write a constructive project brief. When a client takes the time to put their thoughts and aims to paper it helps both parties work together and get through the project as smoothly as possible. A well thought-out brief allows the client to think about and formalise exactly what they want to achieve from the project. And a good brief will help the BuildMYeShop no end by providing a documented point of reference to work to. By communicating as clearly as possible from the start, all the important issues and questions you may have can be addressed before the project begins. This
ensures that You “our client” get’s the best customer service possible and ultimately
get the best value for your money.

We will need your company logo (if you have)
We will need to know any font’s wanting used
We will need to know your colour scheme wanted
Have you seen any other websites/eShops you like
